Wasit governor opposes proposal for a new Suwaira province
The plan would separate northern districts from Wasit, but the governor says the province must remain intact.
Wasit Governor Ali Salimon rejected a provincial-council move to begin creating a new Suwaira province from northern districts of Wasit, Shafaq News reported.
The council had voted on September 29 to recommend the proposal to the federal government and parliament. Supporters cite distance from Kut and the area’s agricultural and oil importance, while the governor argues that Wasit is constitutionally indivisible.
