Night-Surveillance Attacks Raise Alarm in Hawija
Two attacks on thermal-camera positions in less than 24 hours have renewed concern over security gaps southwest of Kirkuk.
Islamic State group militants targeted night-surveillance positions in the Hawija district twice in less than a day, according to Shafaq News. One federal police officer was killed and four others were wounded in the first attack, which also damaged thermal-imaging equipment.
A second incident reportedly struck a Popular Mobilization Forces position and disabled another camera without reported casualties. Local commanders said the attacks highlight difficult-to-cover terrain and gaps between security deployments in parts of Kirkuk and neighbouring areas.
