Khurmatu Farmers Say Land Dispute Is Escalating
Kurdish farmers say lawsuits over more than 2,000 dunams have intensified a long-running dispute in Salahaddin province.
Kurdish farmers in the disputed Khurmatu district say they are facing legal action over more than 2,000 dunams of farmland after Arab settlers filed cases based on agricultural contracts dating to the Baath era. A court team and municipal surveyors recently visited the plots, according to Rudaw.
The farmers say the dispute now includes cases against 26 people, while local officials are seeking talks with the agriculture directorate. The land conflict reflects unresolved property claims and demographic changes in territories covered by Article 140 of Iraq’s constitution.
