Baghdad Sets June 2027 Target for Bringing Factional Arms Under State Control
Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi announced a roadmap to regulate weapons held by armed factions and disarm non-Iraqi groups operating in Iraq.
Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi said Iraq has formally begun work on a roadmap to bring factional weapons under state control, with implementation to be completed no later than June 30, 2027. He also said non-Iraqi armed groups operating in the country would be disarmed.
The government says the plan will be accompanied by procurement of air-defence systems and legislation defining the Popular Mobilization Forces’ place within the security establishment. Some armed factions, however, publicly said they were not bound by the timetable.
