Baghdad Sets June 2027 Target for Bringing Factional Arms Under State Control

Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein said the Iraqi government is advancing a plan to place weapons held by armed factions under state authority, with June 2027 set as the target for completion. He said three of seven factions had accepted the process and begun handing over weapons to Iraqi forces.

Speaking in Washington, Hussein also said Iraq wants direct bilateral security ties with the United States after the coalition mission ended and is prepared to support diplomacy between Washington and Tehran. He said Baghdad is coordinating with federal and Peshmerga forces in disputed areas to avoid security gaps that could be exploited by Islamic State remnants.
